One Simple Step Towards Self-Belief

In my last post, I discussed some of the distractions and how the busyness in our lives leaves no time for us to clarify what we want to change. But it’s not just the chaos, is it? We all have that inner critic, limiting beliefs sabotaging our efforts to even start believing in ourselves. For anything to change, we must first believe – believe we are worthy, deserving, smart enough, good enough to live a more exceptional life!

So how do we stop these negative limiting thoughts? Well, there are several daily exercises that over a few weeks can control and greatly reduce those thoughts (created by our Ego) but in order for that to happen, you must replace them with positive thoughts.

“If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old” ― Peter F. Drucker

They say we have over 70,000 thoughts per day and most of them are exactly the same ones every day. So, if we don’t take action to change them, we can’t expect different outcomes or results. We will keep doing and making similar decisions on how we react, behave and feel what’s best for us. So, let’s get started!

Exercise:  Set your alarm on your phone to remind you to sit for 10 minutes at least twice a day to sit quietly and ask yourself what were you saying to yourself negatively and add the word “yet” to the end. Example:

  • “I am not living a healthy life”
    • “I am not living a healthy life yet”
  • “I am not in my dream job”
    • “I am not in my dream job yet”
  • “I don’t know how I’m going to fit more family time into my busy work schedule”
    • “I don’t know how I’m going to fit more family time into my busy work schedule yet”

By doing this simple exercise a couple of times a day, you are doing one small step to developing “awareness” to your thoughts and taking action to change your thought patterns to work for you as opposed to against you. Secondly, when you feel you still have time to make these statements (examples listed above) happen by adding “yet”, it takes the pressure and negative feeling of “failing” away from them.

Do you see how simple it is to make a little time out of your day to be proactive in changing your thoughts to support you? There are many more simple suggestions like this one that can be added to this exercise but for now, simply start incorporating this one into your daily life and see how it keeps getting easier to be aware how you are thinking!

Time to Focus on Solutions not Resolutions

 Are you ready to change?

The season of giving is upon us – so what are you giving to yourself lately?  Are you giving yourself time to reflect on your life and the direction it’s taking?  Are you on the right path?
Let’s start with thinking about YOU right now. It’s okay to do that because you’re important.  You are at the center of any changes you ever want to make in your life – good or bad!

This is the time of year where there is immense pressure on us, a lot of it is of our own making. The list is long and varied, those of you in business are knee deep in year end, got to hit the number or support hitting the number.  All the while, meeting family or friend commitments in your personal life.  It’s stressful just reading this, isn’t it? Today I want to encourage you to think and act differently.

What can we learn from this and reign in the chaos, create calm, and take back control?  It’s important to quiet your inner critic, stop allowing others to rent space inside your head.  Make some time for reflection. Take time to just breathe – wait before you react.  This is good advice at any time of year but especially this time of year.  People are much more emotionally charged, sensitive, during the holidays.

Historically, we have made this time of year a time for soul searching, for change.  Do we double down on what we’ve been doing or choose a different path?  Far too often these decisions are made in the heat of the season and for the most part never have follow through beyond January.  So, what’s a better way?

It’s starts with you - it has nothing to do with the season. What do you want, do you know? You need to start looking at yourself as the number one priority in your life.  That is not selfish because when you are living a happier, more fulfilled life, you are changing your environment, creating positive energy around you.

Think of all the choices you have each day to create your experiences:
  • Do you choose to be a participant or remain an observer of your own life?
  • Do you choose to spend more time in healthy relationships or not?
  • Do you choose to learn and grow or stay stagnant?

These are only a few examples, it’s time for change – what do you want to change?
